TRANVÍA DE CUENCA

Cuenca’s tram: route, stops and payment

A practical guide to the city’s north–south tram: where it runs, what it costs and how to connect with buses.

One north–south line, 27 stops

Cuenca’s tram has one 10.7 km trunk line connecting the south and north of the city. Its municipal route is Río Tarqui to Parque Industrial and back, with 27 stops along the corridor. 1 6

The central section uses north and south platform labels around Gran Colombia and the historic centre. Follow the destination displayed on the platform rather than assuming that a stop name alone tells you the direction.

The stops by corridor

The central corridor has separate north and south platform names, so the directory below groups the 27 stops by corridor instead of pretending they form one simple numbered list. The operator publishes a separate itinerary sheet for each stop; use the official directory when you need a local connection or platform detail. 3 6

Paying for the tram

The Municipality’s September 2026 notice confirms USD 0.35 as the normal tram fare and USD 0.17 as the preferential fare. An earlier municipal fare resolution distinguishes the payment titles: a cash paper ticket is USD 1.00, a normal contactless or electronic fare is USD 0.35, and the normal five-trip multiviaje title is listed at USD 0.30. Check the machine or operator notice before paying because the title and current availability matter. 1 2

Official tram guidance describes several payment paths: a contactless prepaid card or another authorised electronic method, a paper ticket bought at a vending machine, and virtual payment reached through QR codes displayed at the 27 stops. Availability and instructions can change, so read the machine or stop notice before validating. 4

How to board and transfer

  1. Arrive at the stop for your direction and keep the platform clear.
  2. Let passengers get off before you board. The operator explicitly asks riders to wait for this order.
  3. Validate with the payment method shown for the journey and keep the card or ticket until you leave.
  4. For a bus connection, use the municipal map and the bus planner at a named interchange such as Terminal Terrestre or Feria Libre. Check the bus fare and card rule separately before the second leg.

For service changes, use the operator’s current notices alongside the stop itineraries and payment instructions. 5
