Cuenca

Cuenca is an Andean city and canton whose living historic centre, river valley, museums, food traditions and highland landscapes are closely connected. This guide brings together maps, videos and documents about the city.

A city in an Andean valley

Cuenca sits at about 2,538 metres above sea level, in a valley crossed by the Tomebamba, Yanuncay, Machángara and Tarqui rivers. The canton has 15 urban and 21 rural parishes. A living historic centre

UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca in 1999. Its description highlights the 1557 foundation, the orthogonal plan retained over four centuries, the four rivers, public squares and churches, and the way local, Cañari, Inca, Spanish and later immigrant histories meet in the urban fabric. UNESCO records a 224.14-hectare property and a 1,836.94-hectare buffer zone; they should not be treated as the same boundary. 4 5 6 8 7

Museums, craft and public culture

Cuenca’s museums and cultural spaces are spread across the centre. The municipal modern-art museum describes children's workshops, an information desk and a specialised art library; the tourism foundation's museum guide groups archaeological, religious, artistic and craft spaces across the centre. The Conceptas museum reopened in April 2023 with an exhibition focused on the work of Conceptionist nuns, while the Paccari page shows how a restored historic building also hosted a food and cultural experience. Cajas: water, páramo and controlled visiting

The Cajas National Park is part of Cuenca's wider environmental story. ETAPA explains that the municipality delegated park management to the municipal water and environmental company, linking conservation with the quality and quantity of water for the canton. Its limnology page describes a high-Andean glacial lake system and identifies the Tomebamba and Yanuncay headwaters; a national management-plan PDF records zoning for wetlands, Polylepis and páramo protection. ETAPA's visitor rules permit activities such as hiking, birdwatching, photography and controlled fishing, require registration at control posts, and advise against starting or continuing walks after 16:00. 9 10 11 12 19

Food and an active cultural calendar

Markets, sweets, restaurants and public programming give the city a daily cultural layer. The city publishes an official cultural agenda. During Corpus Christi 2026, a sweets fair brought together with 143 artisans and more than 60 types of traditional sweets.
