Checa

Checa, also known as Jidcay, is a northern rural parish of Cuenca that grew from a former caserío of Sidcay. Its recorded parish foundation is 22 April 1897; local accounts pair the civic history with San Andrés celebrations, river valleys and archaeological traces at Zhinglia.

The parish's official history records two explanations for the name Checa: a memory of the Cañari leader Chica-Cápac and a later association with Archbishop Ignacio Checa y Barba. The same account describes San Andrés as the patron and names processions, village bands, fireworks, dances and community gatherings in the annual religious life. 1 3
