Chaucha
Chaucha is a large, remote rural parish in Cuenca's southwest, in the sub-Andean zone of the western cordillera. Its local identity is shaped by dispersed communities, agriculture, biodiversity and water, with recent public work presenting coffee and community tourism as ways to connect production, heritage and place.
A varied sub-Andean territory
The parish government's geographic account places Chaucha in a landscape of changing climates, mountain ridges, rivers and highland water sources. The provincial tourism catalogue describes varied ecological floors suitable for different crops and emphasizes the work of women in farming, food sovereignty, household income and care of natural resources. 1 2
Routes, trade and community tourism
A University of Cuenca ethnographic study follows the Chaucha–Cuenca trade route from 1940 to 1980, documenting agricultural commerce, transport, merchants, smuggling and the change brought by a mining company. Other research and parish planning point to archaeological, lagoon, Qhapaq Ñan, hot-spring, coffee and trapiche routes; the municipality's current “Chaucha, parroquia del café” proposal gives coffee a public tourism focus. 3 4 5
