El Sagrario

El Sagrario is Cuenca's first urban parish and the civic and religious core of the historic centre. Its small administrative area contains the Catedral Vieja, Plaza Calderón, traditional markets and streets where the city's colonial and republican layers meet.

A first parish and a historic core

The Municipality's urban-division ordinance places El Sagrario between Benigno Malo, Vega Muñoz, Tomás Ordóñez and the Tomebamba. The municipal heritage account describes the historic centre as a concentration of colonial and republican buildings, archaeological places, artisan quarters and markets; the UNESCO inscription belongs to that heritage area, whose limits should not be substituted for the parish boundary. 1 2

Cathedral, markets and daily memory

The municipal Cathedral Vieja page identifies the Iglesia del Sagrario as the city's first parish church and records its adobe, bahareque, Inca stone, lime-and-stone and tile construction. A separate municipal account dates the Mercado 9 de Octubre building to the early 1930s and describes its 600-plus merchants and connection with Plaza Rotary, giving the parish both a devotional and everyday commercial story. 3 4 5 6
