Gil Ramírez Dávalos

Gil Ramírez Dávalos is the compact central parish named for the Spanish official who founded Santa Ana de los Ríos de Cuenca in 1557. Its story is told through the streets, civic buildings, churches and museums of the historic centre, down to the banks of the Tomebamba.

The founder in the city grid

The 1982 ordinance places Gil Ramírez Dávalos between Coronel Talbot, Vega Muñoz, Benigno Malo and the north bank of the Tomebamba. The municipal urban-history study explains that Gil Ramírez Dávalos executed the 12 April 1557 foundation on the former Inca-occupied plain of Tumipamba and that the Spanish damero shaped the historic centre. 1 2
