Hermano Miguel

Hermano Miguel is Cuenca's fifteenth urban parish, created from the large El Vecino parish to recognise the city's Lasallian educator and saint. It is a newer northern urban administrative area whose identity combines the Santo Hermano Miguel devotion, schools, neighbourhood parks and growth toward the Machángara edge.

The municipal reform ordinance says El Vecino's physical and population growth made it necessary to create a new urban parish and names the merits of the Santo Hermano Miguel as the reason for preserving his memory in the civic map. The current PDOT identifies Hermano Miguel as the fifteenth urban parish; this is a specific legal origin, separate from the ecclesiastical parish that also bears the saint's name. 1 2

Education, devotion and public space

The Lasalle school's institutional history records the 1863 opening of Escuela San José in central Cuenca, the enrolment of Francisco Febres Cordero and the later development of the Hermano Miguel school on Avenida Solano. The Archdiocese records patronal celebrations with novenas, processions, biblical performances and community venues; a university parks inventory adds Parque El Camal, Vicente Tamariz and other named parks to the civic picture. 3 4 5 6
