Machángara

Machángara is the large eastern urban parish named for one of Cuenca's four principal rivers. Its territory includes established neighbourhoods and the expanding eastern edge, where the river, Panamericana, conservation areas and new urbanisation meet.

River boundary and urban expansion

The municipal ordinance frames Machángara between the urban limit, the Río Machángara, the Río Cuenca and the Milchichig creek. A 2019 municipal urban-action plan records accelerated, disordered growth at Orillas de Machángara in Quinta Chica Baja and the community's request for a pedestrian connection, making environmental and topographic conditions part of the parish's recent story. 1 2

Capulispamba, Chaullabamba and the edge

University research describes Capulispamba as a neighbourhood already integrated into Cuenca's urban area and documents how Challuabamba was incorporated into the urban nucleus over time. The parks inventory lists only six neighbourhood parks in Machángara, a contrast with its 1,120.39-hectare planning area in the older PDOT table; that relationship helps readers see why centralised facilities may not represent the whole parish. 3 4 5
