Quingeo

San Pedro de Quingeo is a southeastern rural parish whose parish centre was declared Ecuadorian Cultural Heritage in 2009. Its architecture, river landscape, community traditions and archaeological record make it one of Cuenca's clearest places for connecting vernacular life with deeper history.

A protected vernacular centre

The parish GAD records Quingeo's creation as a rural parish on 8 September 1852 and its cultural-heritage declaration on 13 September 2009. The GAD's culture page links that declaration to an INPC Regional del Austro study and Ministry of Culture Agreement 224. Cuenca's planning document explains that the ordinance protects a first-order heritage area and a surrounding area of respect. 1 2 3

River, name and archaeological sites

The University of Cuenca Quingeo prospection thesis studies the landscape around the parish centre, including Quingeoloma, Loma de Guamán and Bauteloma, with ceramic evidence and stratigraphic observation. It records the interpretation of Kinku, a winding form, as one possible explanation for the name Quingeo. 4

Community memory and new rural projects

The municipal 2025 anniversary report describes projects for agricultural supplies, road improvement, participation and social programmes. A 2024 video presents Quingeo as a rural heritage destination. Together they show a parish where heritage is maintained alongside contemporary community work. 5 6
