Santa Ana

Santa Ana is an eastern rural parish of Cuenca organized around a central church and plaza and a network of 21 communities. Its agricultural and livestock life, paja toquilla work, water organization, Inti Raymi and community festivities provide a grounded profile of rural Cuenca.

A parish of communities and shared water

The Santa Ana PDOT PDF identifies 21 recognized communities. A UPS study of community water management places the parish east of Cuenca, records the 1878 civil recognition in the territorial-division law, and describes the organization of water systems as part of local development. The study also documents the community committees and parish institutions involved in that work. 1 2

Agriculture, paja toquilla and ritual

The water-management thesis describes agriculture and livestock as major economic activities and identifies paja toquilla, the church and the wood-fired oven in the parish symbols as markers of local history. It also records Carnival, Holy Week, All Souls, the Santa Ana feast, Inti Raymi and escaramuza among the parish's cultural practices. Plaza, church and landscape

Cuenca's mobility and public-space plan describes Santa Ana's radial growth around the central plaza, with the plaza and church as the main concentration of community activity, and identifies agriculture, livestock and tourism as principal activities.
