Rural parish · Cuenca, Ecuador

Sayausí

Sayausí is a rural parish on Cuenca's western edge whose identity joins community memory, farming and a close relationship with the Cajas landscape. Its parish government presents it as a gateway to Parque Nacional Cajas, while its history page describes older Cañari and Inca route connections.

Routes, memory and the name

The parish history page describes an ayllu and tambo used for rest and exchange on routes linking the coast and highlands, and records several interpretations of Sayausí's Cañari name. 1 3

Cajas, forests and water

The current PDOT frames Sayausí around its proximity to Parque Nacional Cajas, agricultural and tourism potential, ecosystem protection and sustainable production. The municipal PDOT also places Sayausí within wider protected and water-related landscapes, giving useful territorial context without turning a planning designation into a promise of access. 2 6

Rural tourism and living culture

A 2018 rural-tourism video documents the Chakyñanes nature project in Sayausí. The municipal identity programme labels Sayausí's proposed rural identity as agrotourism. 4 5
