Rural parish · Cuenca, Ecuador
Turi
Turi is Cuenca's hilltop rural viewpoint, known locally as the balcony of the city. Its parish centre joins a panoramic lookout and church with Indigenous and mestizo cultural memory, nearby hills and a growing set of nature, food and recreation businesses.
A sacred hill and a layered name
The parish history page presents Turi as a hill with ancestral Cañari and Inca significance and records competing readings of the name, including ‘brother’ in Cañari and ‘gold’ in Kichwa. It also quotes local historical writing that frames Turi as a close or preferred companion of Cuenca. 2 3
Church, lookout and hills
The parish profile identifies the hilltop lookout, a church dating to 1923, the Señor de Belén grotto, Galería Vega and nearby viewpoints such as Icto Cruz, Boquerón, Monjas and Calvario. The parish's own tourism pages provide separate descriptions of these landscapes and businesses. They are useful place leads, while current hours and prices should be treated as changeable. 1 4 5
Festivals and recreation
Turi's official profile names celebrations for the Virgen de la Merced, San Agustín and the Señor de Belén, with music, dance and local food. The municipal rural-identity programme calls Turi recreational and links future work to Icto Cruz and local gastronomy. A 2016 video gives a compact visual introduction to Turi's centre and lookout. 1 6 7
